Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training
Overview
The Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training is the standard qualification for Cycle instructors in the UK. Based around a four day practical course it provides a thorough grounding in teaching child and adult learners cycling to the National Standard (Bikeability). This is an enjoyable and practical training course comprising of a mixture of classroom/workshop sessions and training on local roads.

This is the new qualification, developed by The Bikeability Trust and 1st4Sport Qualifications for 2019. In the future all cycle instructors will have to either take this course, or update their existing NSI qualification to this standard. Qualification will enable you to work for Bikeability schemes across the country delivering the 3 levels of Bikeability training to child and adult learners in schools, sports facilities and public sessions.
Requirements
Applicants for this course should:

be 18 or over

be able to cycle confidently in a variety of road and traffic conditions

be able to communicate well in english (both speaking and writing)

have a roadworthy bike
-
be fit enough to spend considerable time riding, this is a practical course.

Experience of teaching, or working with children is an advantage in this career. Being a parent counts! Prior to working as a Cycling instructor you will also need a DBS check, although this does not form part of this course.
Content
To qualify as a cycling instructor you'll need to:

Register with Cycle North

Do the pre-course reading - accessed via an online portal at 1st4Sport

Complete the 5 day training course - practical and classroom sessions

Complete the online learning elements - multiple choice assessments to do during the course

Complete your qualification with a post course assessment - delivering Bikeability (up to six months after the training course)

Reviewing cycle training and assessment

Planning to improve professional practice
In addition to the practical course during the day, there are also online tasks to complete.

The Sheffield course is at Manor Top Army Reserve Centre,

These are three days of mostly practical training, with some evening prep to do. The sessions will run from 9am each day and candidates will have to attend all days.
Prior to the course there are a number of online tasks to complete.
The training is free for new staff.

Cost
There are full bursaries available if you are going on to work for Cycle North, delivering Bikeability in Leeds, Sheffield, Wakefield. Rotherham, Doncaster or Kirklees.
The full cost of the course for external candidates is £800.
If you are going to work for a Bikeability training provider a bursary should be available, you will need to speak to them about this in advance.

Updating your NSI qualification
Overview
If you are an existing NSI trainer, and wish to continue to deliver Bikeability training, you'll need to upgrade your current qualification to the new standard. The Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training is the the new qualification, developed by The The Bikeability Trust and 1st4Sport Qualifications for 2019. By 2024 all cycle instructors will need to have this qualification to teach Bikeability. There is a Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) route specifically for current NSI instructors, which means that you won't have to the 4 day course.

Requirements
To achieve the Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training via the Recognised Prior Learning route, you need to be a currently practicing NSI or NSIT Bikeability Instructor.
Content
The pathway to converting your NSI qualification to the new standard, is as follows:
Step 1 - Register with Cycle North
Step 2 - Pay registration fees
Step 3 - You will be registered as a "Registered Instructor"
Step 4 - Complete a series of online assessment tasks
Step 5 - Complete an E-portfolio with evidence of your recognised prior learning
Step 6 - Tutor assessment of your online tasks and E-portfolio
Step 7 - Practical assessment of Bikeability teaching
Step 8 - You will be registered as a "Qualified Instructor"
Step 9 - Opportunities for continuing professional development
Step 10 - Annual renewal of your registration with the Bikeability Trust

The practical assessment will take place during Cycle North bikeability sessions in Leeds, Sheffield or Wakefield. Completing your assessment outside of this area is possible, but will incur additional costs for assessor travel.
